If you really want to have a great time when visiting the "big apple"--New York--here are a few good tips to make sure you have a true NY experience:
1) Do not dress up or act like a tourist! You know: do not carry a camera everywhere you go and wear sneakers and Levis jeans! Remember, the whole idea is to blend in and not stand out like a sore thumb! Wear comfortable walking shoes.
2) Do not take guide books with you. But do your homework at home by reading up-to-date guidebooks the day before leaving. The whole idea is for you to know where you are going before you get lost in a busy sidewalk. Bring notes that you have written down of places and directions on how to get there; refer to these notes while taking a snack break.
3) New York is a fast-paced world. So once you know where you are headed move fast. The advantage? You will get to see more with the time you save.
4) Eat and drink where the local residents do. If you do not know, ask a cab driver, a hotel receptionist, or even a bellboy.
5) Crime in New York is prevalent, so you have to be on your guard at all times. Keep a close eye on your possessions and do not leave them unattended. Never flash your money. It's very smart to place your most expensive items out of view. Women: do not go jogging in Central Park by yourself or in the late evening. Always keep your eyes open to the people around you. Never drive or walk to dark alleys with dead ends.
6) You may want to see The Empire State Building which used to be the tallest building in the world. Located at 34th Street and 5th Avenue.
7) Visit The United Nations: it's located at 42nd-46th Street and 1st Avenue.
8) A fun place to see is called The Chelsea Piers; this is a large complex that has an indoor golf driving range, ice skating and roller skating rinks, bowling, baseball batting cages, an archery area, a big gymnasium, and an olympic sized swimming pool. You can find this amusement complex at 23rd Street and 12th Avenue.
9) A museum worth visiting is The Cloisters. It displays artifacts, paintings, photographs, carvings, and the history of The Native American Indian. It's located at 155th Street and Broadway.
10) Do not forget to stop by The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You can take a ferry.
